By fingerprint to my baby

Bodden Clinical Complexes use biometrics

What was discussed in the last month for airports and passports has been realised in Ribnitz Damgarten for one year. Here among the personnel even the mothers can obtain access by their fingerprint to the baby ward and thus to their babies.

By application of biometric procedures like scanning the fingerprint, the face, the iris or by recognition of speech persons can be identified definitely and consequently they can receive securely and comfortably access to specific rooms.

In the Bodden Clinical Complexes this is done via a fingerprint. The company iSM (Institut für System-Management GmbH) installed an appropriate sensor field (DEVICE) at the door of the baby room with a computer for the evaluation of the data. During the verification the identity of the person is examined by fingerprint. The template stored in the computer (transformation of the finger print with specific groove arrangement into a coded byte sequence) is compared with the scanned fingerprint.

While the access control for physicians and nurses is meanwhile everyday life, persons who are not registered stand before "locked doors". Thus only authorised persons receive the admission to the room, foreigner are ignored. The security of the newborns is ensured and the parents have the feeling of good medical support.

In the time after the arduous birth mothers need privacy and they want their babies to be in a secure ambiance. This was improved by the access control in Ribnitz Damgarten. A fingerprint cannot be lost, forgotten or stolen. Compared to keys or smart cards, it is unique and cannot be copied. The Security and the service for the mother increase, because she can visit their baby anytime, without waiting for the nurse with an appropriate key. For the nurses this means saving of time.

In order to convert the fingerprint into a template during the registration, a finger is put on a sensor field and scanned up to three times. Only by "alive" fingerprints are generated similar, but never resembles images, so that an abuse with rubber copies is excluded. The sensor is very sensitive and cannot be outfoxed. If the finger is changed for example by a small cut or by a cream layer, the entrance will be refused. Therefore it is advisable to scan a second finger, which can be used then as a substitute. The sensor reacts sensitively to the body temperature. Thus for example a very cold finger is rejected and the entrance is refused accordingly. However, it is problematic for those persons, who do not have a usable fingerprint for example by burns or direct chemical contact. About two percent of the female patients and the personnel cannot use the fingerprint identification due to the circumstances specified above. The personal data are protected, abuses are not possible, because not the fingerprint, but only a template are stored. If the mother or an employee leaves the hospital, the template is deleted.

The Bodden Clinical Hospitals experienced very well with this door solution after the implementation phase, all involved accept the system and are convinced. The nurses have an additional expenditure because of the registration and introduction of the mothers into the procedure. But this expenditure has payed off, when the mothers not depend on the assistance of the nurses while every visit to their babies. The Bodden Clinical Complexes belong to the first hospitals, which works with biometric access controls. Further Hospitals are: the Hospital Bad Reichenhall and the HELIOS Hospital in Borna, which both use the iris recognition for the protection of the baby rooms.

The utilisation of biometric procedures is a component of the product family of the "Institut für System-Management". Specialised in Security Business Intelligence, the iSM has concentrated to the centralised user- and authorisation - administration, which can be combined with biometrics.

The employees of the iSM for example log on to the computer by fingerprint, thus passwords, which can be guessed easily, are not used any longer.
