IdM as Business Layer

In many companies there are already partial solutions for identity management functions. The solutions are based on products which have a specific strength in functionality. Surely all these systems perform a specific purpose very well, but do not or only partially meet the requirements for the overall framework of business processes with focus to the proper management of IT skills.

Essential for the strategy of the user and thus the selection of the product is based on what the user’s goal is. This goal ultimately determines the required level of the system architecture for provisioning solutions overall, and thus its functionality.

What functionality must be provided in a business layer in order to meet the requirements to support IT business processes?

Firstly, the role model of the IdM system must be flexible enough to cover the diversity of task profiles. Second, there must be a pre-configured provision of a minimum number of processes. Then in turn the integration of roles and processes requires an efficient rule processing. These rules and regulations include, the use of Security Classifications for attributes and objects as an additional dimension of authorizations within the IdM regulations.

It is important that the architecture of the IdM system can implement the requirements of a Business Layer. The impact of an IdM solution will prove itself, especially if other IdM systems are already in use and provide all applications on a particular platform (e.g. a host).
